Reportage

Illustrated journalism

This was a project to document the ongoing refugee crisis in Calais in the spring of 2022. I took a sketchpad and paintbrush to northern France and partnered with a local organization to draw the challenges faced by many of the refugees over the course of the week. The goal wasn't so much to replace photography as journalistic tool but to build on it and use traditional methods of watercolor and ink to provide a different visual perspective. People were very willing to open up when they saw I was drawing and felt more comfortable sharing their stories - some of which I've captured here.
